Quail..the perfect whole prey for me
One of the “special” meals I get a few times a month is quail. I don’t get quail many times a month because it’s not easy to buy whole quail in Singapore and they’re usually a little pricey. But it’s the only whole prey I get and it’s a great size for me because it’s a little bird. I could totally tackle a quail.
Mummy usually buys quail for me from the Marketplace at 112 Katong. She buys a pack of 4 frozen quails for about SGD28 and each quail can feed me for about 1.5 days. Most of the quail bones are just the right size for me and easy to eat. Mummy will usually cut away the bones which she worries is too small or too sharp. But the leg and wings bones are perfect.
You can also buy quail from Farmart and it’s cheaper than buying from the Marketplace. The only downside (and sadly the super big downside for Mummy) is that Farmart doesn’t have an online store so you will have to go all the way to Sungei Tengah to buy quail from them. Uncle William from Farmart if you somehow read this, please offer delivery!!! I know other people who really wish you deliver too!!
When buying quail, you might want to check on the packing date to see how long the quail was killed and packed. I really like quail but only if it hasn’t been dead and frozen for too long. Mummy once bought me some quail that had been frozen for at least 1 or 2 months already when she bought it and I didn’t like it much at all. Moreover she fed me the pack of 6 quails over the next month so the quails were kept for even longer. I didn’t really want to eat that batch of quail…Mummy and Daddy had to coax me to eat it by crushing my favourite freeze dried treats over it. Mummy could tell the meat looked and felt different…so now she always makes sure to try to buy quail that is recently packed. Not sure if other kitties will feel the same way as me about this…it might just be my preference…other kitties might not mind…
Anyway check me out working on half a quail!

Hi, thanks for a great website. Btw, you can get 2 frozen ‘Empress’ quails from Huber’s (Dempsey branch) for $9.90. I feed my cat whole chickens and have found the bones of ‘Empress’ chickens to be smaller and easier to swallow. My cat easily finishes a chicken drumstick (meat and bones) within minutes.
Thanks for liking my blog!!
Your kitty is a good raw eating kitty…I refuse to eat big big bones like drumstick bones. Lazy!
Mummy must go Huber’s one day and check it out. We heard you can also get sweetbread there! Thanks for the tip!
Hello Misty!
Our mommy is going to try give us quail. She went to Farmart to the spring quail from uncle william. But it comes as a whole with the head too! So she dont know if we can eat that or need to remove? Is Spring Quail the right one to buy? We cant wait to try!!
well…your mommy can put the head on the plate and see if you are willing to eat…by right feeding raw whole prey means everything..head, feathers/fur, all organs etc. remind your mommy if she is cutting the quail into smaller pieces to feed not to cut too small pieces. Bigger is better than too small..you don’t want to risk choking. Especially the quail bones can be quite small and sharp…
